QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Mar 25, 2008
Question:
I have 3 feral cats (sisters), 2 of which are indoor/outdoor (mostly outdoor; the 3rd is exclusively outdoor, as she is not tolerated by her sisters.) Lady is the "alpha" cat and sleeps with me every night. Fluff would stay with me most nights, but sometimes stayed out all night. Starting a couple of weeks ago, Fluff's behavior suddenly changed. She now gets panicky when she's inside, even for just a few minutes. She'll come in to eat, but then wants to leave immediately. She starts meowing incessantly & yowls like when she's trapped. She wants to go out even when it's very cold and/or raining -- very unusual for her! The only way she's OK with being indoors is if I leave the door ajar so she could leave if she wanted to. All 3 of my cats are very skittish & frighten easily. As far as I know, I'm the only person they interact with. Fluff is the "scarediest" cat of the 3: she gets spooked by the slightest noise (the rustling of a plastic bag, the wind blowing.) But I can't explain why this very sudden change in her behavior. We have had some very windy, rainy weather recently... but the behavior persists even when it's calm outside. I worry about her because it has gotten unusually cold, especially at night. Any theories on why this sudden change in behavior, or advice as to how to "bring her back"?
Adriana B.

My first question would be - is she spayed? This sounds like classic in heat behavior. If she isn't, this would be the first thing I would address.
