QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Mar 25, 2008
Question:
Our cat always gets matted fur when summer is over from sitting under our bushes. She is a long haired cat by the way. It has always cleaned up over winter, but this year it doesn't seem to be getting better. It's been clumping up and some are small and can be pulled out easily, others she eventually gets them out. We have also noticed a whole bald spot on the back of her neck but it looks like it's growing back in. We've been wondering how to handle this. Could it be that it's so dry during the winter or her food. She's terrible to groom. I do what I can and when she'll let me. Just looking for a little advice on what our next step could or should be. Thanks for any help.

Many long haired cats have a difficult time shedding their undercoat, and this is what causes the matting. The first thing is to get a complete exam performed by a vet, as issues such as dental disease, arthritis, and other medical problems can affect grooming behavior. If all of this checks out, then you might consider having her clipped by a groomer a couple of times a year. Some groomers are very good at working with cats and can do this without sedation. You might ask your vet if they do cat grooming or can recommend someone who does.
