QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Mar 25, 2008
Question:
My wife and I have a cat that is 16 months old. We have had him for 9 months now. He is nuetered but still has his claws. He also is an entirely indoor cat. The last month or so he has been whining and crying at night. He'll sit on the floor at the foot of the bed. We don't know why he is doing this. We first thought he was looking for our other cat and was sad because he couldn't find her. We don't believe that is the reason though. Please help us because I am a very light sleeper and he keeps me up every night.

The first thing to do is have a check-up at the vet. If he is 16 months old, he is likely due for his annual exam if he had his last set of vaccines at the normal time. If his exam is normal, then he might just be bored and want attention. You can either try to wear him out at night, or you can isolate him at night so he can't wake you up. Cats are somewhat nocturnal animals, so this is his normal time to be up and active - he just can't understand why you wouldn't want to be awake also!
