QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Mar 25, 2008
Question:
I have 4 tamed feral cats (1 3/4 yrs old) living in my backyard. All are neutered and have their shots. I can pet them and pick them up. I feed them on a schedule morning and evening and provide shelter. Here's my question: My favorite of these cats (the most tame male) has started disappearing for days at a time. In January he was gone for 10 days, then came back unharmed. As of today, he has been gone 6 days. After 1 1/2 years of routinely being home for meals, why is he going off somewhere? How far could he be going? Is he lost?
Linda Wolverton

It is very unlikely that he is lost. If he has started wandering, either something is driving him away or something is tempting him to go further than normal. Given his cushy set-up, it is likely the latter. He may be exploring, or expanding his territory, or investigating another cat. It is just hard to say. If he is neutered, and it would not work to make him an indoor cat, it is unlikely you will be able to do much to keep him at home.
