QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Mar 25, 2008
Question:
About six weeks ago, I had to put one of my two cats to sleep. Unexpectedly, I brought new cat into my small apartment and he's about 1 year old. My older cat (11 yrs) is not taking to this very well. I've come to learn that I most likely did not handle the introduction correctly, and now my worry is that the older cat will never come to tolerate the new one. They are both neutered males. The older one lives in the bedroom, mostly under the bed, with the door closed. The new cat has the living room. They have been together a few times, with older kitty hissing, spitting, etc. and it's not improving. Anything I can do at this point?
Gail Lechner

When you have overt aggression like this, all you can do is back up and try the process all over again, just much slower. I would keep them separated for several weeks, then try feeding them on opposite sides of the same door. The next step is supervised visits only, then going onto unsupervised time together only when they both seem comfortable. If at any time either one seems unhappy, back up to the previous step for a longer period of time. Sometimes the best you can hope for is that they will divide up the territory to their liking and tolerate each other's presence.
