QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Mar 25, 2008
Question:
I recently obtained a 5 yr old male cat from a shelter. At first, he was very friendly wth me, jumping on me constantly and trying to give me kisses. He started scratching himself a lot & sneezing so I took him to the vet. He did not like the experience at all. THe vet said he had an upper respiratory infection and sent meds home for him. He combats me when I try to give him his meds. He does not want to come to me now and tries to isolate himself most of the time in the closet. Its been a few days and his behavior isn't changing. Is there anything I can do to get him to be social with me again?
Lisa

You might consider asking your vet if there is any way to have his medications compounded so that they are easier to give. Sometimes they can be made into a chewy treat or a gel that can be rubbed on the ear so that the interaction is less stressful. If he is feeling better, you can start trying to lure him out with special treats, such as tuna or onion-free babyfood meats. He will come around - it just may take some time. Good luck!
