QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Mar 25, 2008
Question:
I have this cat that is really mean, hes about 7 - 8 years old...he attacks people that come into the house, and he gets mean when others are around. Well, he has been an indoor cat the whole time, but over the past year he has started to want outside all the time. Due to his mean nature, he has started biting us and drawing blood and its only getting worse. When anyone tries to disciple he just fights back, even with water. I live in a neighborhood with alot of children and fear that if I let him out, some kid will try to pet him and get attacked. He has been with us since he was born and has always been treated very very well. I just don't know what to do anymore. Why is he so mean? and is there any way that his behavior can be changed? What should I do? Thanks
Casey

Noone really knows why some cats develop aggression towards people while others don't. You definitely have to consider liability issues here - if your cat bites someone and they have to seek medical treatment, you may be responsible. I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian to discuss possible medication and/or behavior modification to try to fix this before letting him come in contact with people he doesn't know. Cat bites can be extremely serious. Good luck!
