QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: May 5, 2008
Question:
My 16 year old cat, Celeste, began using the carpet (in our playroom) instead of her litterbox when her brother died this past July. She and he used to hang out together in the playroom. She has seen a vet, and after several hernia surgeries, she is fine. I have tried everything else to correct this behavior: phermone spray, new litterboxes, litterboxes in different places, etc., but the only way she'll use her litterbox is if I shut her in our bedroom/bathroom area. I hate to keep her confined, since she already has to stay upstairs to avoid one of our (cat aggressive) dogs. Any suggestions?
Karen Hirsch

Has she had blood and urine tests performed to rule out health problems such as kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes and urinary tract infections? This is definitely the place I would start - if bloodwork and urine tests are normal, you may consider having her checked for arthritis. Often pain is the reason older cats leave the box. I would definitely discuss these possibilities with your veterinarian - at 16 years of age, this is more likely to be medical than behavioral.
