QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: May 5, 2008
Question:
I have just rescued what looks to be a less than 1 year old kitten, that may be pregnant. I have several concerns. First, my fixed male won't stop mounting her. Second, she urinates soooo much (she is also drinking alot) and her stools are very loose. There does not seem to be any worms in the stools and she will let me feel her belly. I have never dealt with a pregnant cat, so I can only go by my human signs. Her belly seems large, she is eating and drinking alot. I can't get an appointment for a month and by then I will probably have my answers. Also, how soon after she has the kittens (if she is pregnant) can I get her fixed and when can they start vaccinating her.
Pam

You might try having her seen somewhere else sooner - these can be symptoms of a uterine infection rather than pregnancy, which can be quite serious. See if there is an urgent care or emergency facility in your area if none of the regular veterinarians can see her any sooner. You can get her spayed as soon as she quits nursing the kittens (usually about 6 weeks after delivery), and the same goes for vaccines, if she is pregnant.
