QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Oct 11, 2007
Question:
I have heard that neutering cats makes them fat and it can even be harmful for them. Is that true?
Betty

Neutering cats doesn't make them fat - overfeeding them does. It is true that after this operation a cat's daily calorie requirement decreases by about 25-30%, but most of us don't decrease how much food we offer them after the surgery. It always comes down to calories in, calories out.

Neutering our pets provides many benefits - behavioral, medical, and above all in population control. To my knowledge, there has never been any evidence that neutering a cat is harmful.
