QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Jul 15, 2008
Question:
I am seeking help for my 9 year old male orange tabby named Tommy. Tommy is a fantastic cat in almost every way. He likes to play, likes to talk and hang out, and doles out many, many hugs to his family. However, it has been years since Tommy has used a litter box to defecate. When the problem first started, he would defecate right next to the litter box. As the years have passed, though, he has taken to defecating pretty much anywhere BUT the litter box. My husband and I have been living with this problem for more than 8 years now, having tried behavior modification strategies recommended by Tommy's vets, attempting to administer Prozac (which was a slobbering, stressful disaster), and treating Tommy with feline herbal remedies (Calm Down administered twice daily, as well as pheromone atomizers). We recently discovered that Tommy has hyperthyroidism, which we have successfully been treating with medication. We were hopeful that diagnosis and treatment would result in a change with Tommy's defecation problems, but that has not happened. While the defecating issue has always been annoying, we no longer feel we can live with it, now that we have welcomed our first child into the house. We cannot risk having our little girl find Tommy's poo packages before we do.

Defecating outside the box is almost always related to an aversion to the litter box. Make sure you have a very large, uncovered box, at least one box per cat in the household plus an extra, try various cat litters. You might consider consulting a behaviorist to suggest additional ways to work him back into the box, but there is something about where you want him to go that he does not like. I am sorry for your problems, and really hope you hit on the right solution. Good luck!
