QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Jul 21, 2008
Question:
We have two cats, both of whom are 9 years old. We've been feeding them a "Science Diet" dry food for their entire lives, and one of them has just started throwing up continuously over the past week. We switched their food to a "sensitive stomach" type of the Science Diet, and he seems a little better. However, he still looks like he's throwing up as much as he consumes in food. Our cat seems happy enough and still very interested in life. We took him to the vet a few months ago, and the vet found a lump under one of his front shoulders. We won't be sure of what it is unless he undergoes invasive surgery, and we're not sure if we want to put him through that trauma. Is there anything we can do to make our cat more comfortable? We're really worried about him. Thanks.
Alyse

You need to get him back into your vet as soon as possible. Frequent vomiting can be a sign of more serious health problems, and should be investigated. As far as finding out what the lump is, it may or may not be related, but often "putting him through" an invasive surgery is a necessary step to find out what is wrong so that we don't put him through a longer period of illness due to not having a diagnosis. Best of luck!
