QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Oct 12, 2007
Question:
My cat is pregnant but i want her to be spayed because i know i wont be able to take care of the kittens. Is it safe to spay the queen when she is pregnant? i am scared to do it lest it harm my cat in any way
Chetan Salian

The risks of spaying a pregnant cat are slightly higher than in one that is not pregnant. The blood vessels to the uterus are enlarged, making the risk of hemorrhage somewhat higher. However, most veterinarians have had a great deal of experience with these procedures, so the risk is still minimal. Although this opinion may be somewhat controversial, I feel that having the procedure is preferable to bringing a litter of unwanted kittens into a world already overflowing with cats that can't find homes.
