There are many different reasons why cats go outside of the litter box. Many cats will not use a litter tray that is too dirty. If necessary, clean out the litter box as often as possible. You also need to clean the areas where the cat visits frequently, spraying the areas well with Lysol or a similar disinfectant with a pleasant strong smell. You can also try putting the litter tray in a more attractive place to the cat, the bathroom, for example. Or place the litter box next to the particular spot where your cat has been going and show it to your cat; maybe this is his perferred spot to go.

Add another litter box. More than one option sometimes helps in encouraging cats to use them. You will usually find he will prefer one over the other. This will also help with finding the "perfect" spot for it.

Have you changed the type of litter you use? Some cats do not like particular types of litter. You might need to try several different types (ex. clay or pellets).

Are there any other changes to the environment, like another pet or the cat being home alone more often? Sometimes not using the litter box is a behavioral issue. He might be depressed or anxious about something.

Lastly, he could have a medical problem. Sometimes if cats are having trouble going to the bathroom, and especially if they are in pain, they will associate the litter box with the pain and choose to go elsewhere. They become afraid of the littler box.

So, my advice would be to figure out why he is going outside of the box, by exploring all of the above possibilities. (Then, you will not have to worry about him going outside and getting into fights). I also advise you to speak with your vet, in case there is a medical issue. In the mean time, you can put newspaper or puppy pads around the litter box and refer to the cat articles and advice link on this website for tips on cleaning up pet messes and eliminating odors.
