QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Oct 10, 2007
Question:
I have a cat Tigit who's been with us for 5 years, Since moving in to the complex the builders have been making alot of noice during the day which has made her move during the day to the bottom of the complex where she plays in the forest and drinks from the stream that runs at the bottom of the complex, where is can get peace and quiet. She comes home to eat and let us know she still around, sleeps with us at night. The couple who live there and taken it she prefers them to us. I have just found out the problem I thought was innocent and small is much bigger. We have asked them nicely to not encourage her into their house, but it seems as though they don't respect the fact she is our cat, our baby. They have renamed my cat Annabella, they have given her own bed in their home and they encourage to keep calling her into their home, wouldn't Tigit be confused as to whom she should be loyal to. We have tried to handle the situation as calmly as possible, but the matter, is starting to get out of hand now, and I want my cat back! They went away last week on holiday and Tigit is back to her old self again. So what has changed? Makes you think, doesn't it!

Personally, I grew up in a neighborhood where everyone's cats were welcome in each others' yards and houses. My cats would visit the next door neighbors and their cats would come visit us. Everyone living in my neighborhood were friends and we took care of each others' pets. However, if you do not have such a relationship with your neighbors and you do not want them to encourage her to visit, here are a few suggestions.

If you are going to continue to let the cat outside, I would get her a collar with tags on, so there is no confusion as to who her own is; this is always good in case she wonders too far. Another option is to only take her outside under your supervision or try a leash (my cat loves his leash!). Lastly, you could keep the cat indoors, so there is no possibility of her questioning her home. Or you could use a combination of such suggestions in limiting her visits with the neighbors.

In addition, you could try to talk with them again. Ask them why they insist on welcoming your cat. Maybe you could advise them to adopt a cat from a shelter or rescue group; there are plenty of cats (and dogs) in need of good homes!
