QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Oct 12, 2007
Question:
I have a beautiful male Maine Coon about 8 years old. He's scratching himself over the left eye and again behind the right ear to the point of raw, hairless bloody sores. I've been treating them with hydrogen peroxide and triple antibiotic ointment which helps it to heal. Sometimes I just have to put his "lampshade" collar on to stop him from scratching himself raw. Just about the time it looks good, he's back at scratching it again. My vet just treats him with a steroid shot which only calms him for about 2-3 weeks. I hat the use of steroid but I'm unhappy that my vet is treating the symptom rather the the cause. Worse that he's using steroids as a treatment. HELP!

This might be a good case to consider asking for a referral to a veterinary dermatologist. There are many dermatopathies, or skin diseases, that can lead to these symptoms. In general, a thorough, systematic work-up to rule out parasites, fungi, auto-immune diseases and allergies is necessary. While steroids are generally safer in cats than in dogs or people, they can still have undesired side effects, so getting a definitive diagnosis is key to minimizing their use.
