QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Oct 25, 2007
Question:
We have a new little kitten - about 12 weeks old who is very playful and fearless. He is basically a little scamp. At the same time we have an older cat aged about 6 years old. We have kept the two apart as recommended since the kitten's arrival in the house and things are going relatively well considering that our older cat has a right to be upset with our playful newcomer. My question is about food - we are keeping all food bowls and water totally separate but whenever the little kitten is downstairs he tries to eat our older cats food. What is the best way to stop this?
Ed

Actually, you probably don't need to. Adult cat foods are required to be balanced for growth as well. They are not quite as ideally formulated for a kitten as kitten food, but it certainly isn't going to hurt anything for your new kitty to sneak a few bites.

Also, just make sure you have your new kitten tested for feline leukemia and FIV before letting them get too friendly. Ideally you would have two tests eight weeks apart, both negative, before allowing full access.
