Question:
i have a six month old persian that HATES being brushed. she's normally the sweetest kitten ever-- she loves to be held and pet-- but she turns ferocious whenever i bring out the brush. how can i get her to behave while i brush her because the mats are becoming a serious issue?
Jamie

First of all, if the mats are severe and painful to her to have pulled out, you might consider a visit to a groomer to start over. It will be tough to make her love the brush when it hurts every time it comes near her. Once you have a mat-free coat, start out very slowly with lots of positive reinforcement. Don't try restraining her while brushing - instead, consider starting out with a grooming glove, available at pet stores, that lets you accomplish some hair removal while just petting her with your hand. Give treats and praise if she is tolerating this well. Once she puts up with this without becoming aggressive, start with a light wire brush, again slowly and making sure not to get too heavy-handed. The next step up would be getting her to allow a mat rake or undercoat remover to deal with the small mats that are sure to come up with this breed of cat. If she just refuses to get used to having you brush her, it is not worth ruining your relationship over. Consider using a professional groomer every 6-8 weeks to keep her coat mat free.
