Question:
Hi. My cat is scratching my wallpaper in the hallway and I don`t know how to stop it. Can you help me? My hallway was just renewed and it is horrible how it looks now.

Cats have to scratch, that's their natural behavior and need. It just happens to think the wallpaper is one of the best places to do it. Most cats prefer a scratchy surface, one that they could dig their nails into and that would also provide more of a workout.

The key here is to attract the cat to scratch something else.

Some other things you can try:

- Get a scratching post (or some other item), sprinkle its surface with catnip, so she's attracted to it
- Purchase a catnip-scented sisal scratch mat or cardboard
- Praise your cat whenever he scratches his posts and to shout a sharp, piercing NO when he scratches the wallpaper
- Sprinkle the wallpaper with some scent cats don't like, like alcohol, citrus, hot sauce or soap.

Good luck!
