QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Dec 4, 2007
Question:
Sometimes when I need to go on a trip, I ask my neighbors to take care of my cat. The problem is that my cat is very angry with strangers and hisses at them. My neighbors are nice people and think my cat is evil and hates humans or something and I am afraid to ask them the next time.. Is there a way to make my cat be nicer to them (and other people)? Thanks!
Tom

You need to try to desensitize your cat to people other than yourselves. Try having your neighbors come over when you are home and spend time with the cat. Have them offer treats first, then gradually start petting the cat. At no stage should you pressure the cat to tolerate more companionship than it wants. If you really take your time, and associate your neighbors with pleasant experiences rather than the upset of you being away, your cat may start to enjoy their company.
