QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Jan 10, 2008
Question:
My cat is about 5yr old and she and I have had a really close relationship until about 4 months ago. at that time I got a new boyfreind and at first she liked him but he played to rough with her and now she is afraid of him well about 3 weeks ago she started hiding under the bed and going to the bathroom there then about a week ago she bolted out and I hadn't seen her for about 4 days then I found her but now she's gone missing again, everytime she sees him she runs off. I want my cat back and my boyfreind knows now that he was wrong in playing with her that way. Is there any way that I can get her to forgive us and have her a part of the family again once we find her again?
Kathy

Regaining her trust will take time, especially if she feels threatened. You should start by working with her and then worry about her regaining trust with your boyfriend. It might help to confine her to one room, so you can keep track of her and she will not be able to hide as much. If you have a spare room, that would be ideal. Make it cozy in there, feed her in there, and keep her litter pan in there.

Spend an hour or two in there with her (or however much spare time you have a few moments a day), for her to get used to your presence. At first I wouldn't try to pet or hold her; just hang out with her, read a book, play some music, talk to her. Eventually, begin to approach her or she may decide to come out and say hello to you. Try putting baby food (meat flavored) on your fingers and let her lick or use treats as persuassion. You want to use positive re-enforcement instead of negative.

It can take some time until she feels comfortable around you again (I know it can be frustrating), but hopefully she will forgive you.
