QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Jan 10, 2008
Question:
My mother and I are in the process of adopting a sweet little 2.5-3 month old black female kitten from our local shelter, Our county is obsessive about making sure they place the animals with the right people, so we are still waiting on them to come check out our house and finally approve us. Meanwhile, we have visited her about 4 times since we applied to adopt her, she is very very sweet, she always crawls up right onto my chest and snuggles with my face and neck, she sniffs around and licks my eyelashes, mouth and ears then gets comfortable hugging my neck and purrs and purrs while we pet her. Yesterday however, she did her usual sniff around, and then i guess after she confirmed who i was, she started lightly biting on my lip, chin, and ears, and my mom's fingers. She had never done this before, The guy who is usually there with the cats said that she does that to show ownership or say that she likes you, I remember the last cat we had never did that as a kitten, he just cuddled and purred(my brother claimed him when he moved out), So I am wondering if thats actually the reason or is that her way of playing with us now that she is comfortable with us or what?
Th3fragile

Playful biting and nipping is normal for kittens to do. When they play with their siblings, they bite and wrestle with each other. That is their way of playing. I am fostering 3 kittens at the moment and they like to nip my fingers, especially if they smell and taste like the treats I had in my hands!

So, friendly little bites are signs of love and by the sound of it, she likes you deeply. Just be cautious, in that sometimes a kitten does not know the difference between a "nip" and "biting" too hard. So allowing her to nibble is okay, but be sure to tell her "NO!" with a little tap on the nose, if she hurts you. You don't want her to learn any bad habits.
