QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Jan 10, 2008
Question:
Hello! I've had my cat for 11 months now. I adopted her from the local humane society, so she has spent some time as a stray. When I got her she was extremely under weight for being two years old. This being my first cat, I listened to every thing anyone told me about cats. I had heard cats are happy with you leaving their food out, so that they may eat as they please. So I did just that, and my cat began over eating and throwing up all over my house. So then I tried just feeding her one or two times a day, and she still throws up sometimes, but not as often. But she is ALWAYS hungry. At night she gets into my kitchen cabinets and eats food out of them. She eats any food off the dishes in the sink. She gets into the garbage when she can. She gets into anything and everything that she can that could possibly contain food. I don't know what to do. I feel like she doesn't know when she is hungry and when she is full because she has starved earlier in her life. PLEASE help me before my husband makes me get rid of her. I am feeding her purina cat chow for indoor cats, if that helps. THANKS!
Amber

I suggest you have a veterinarian look at her to make sure she does not have a digestive issue or any other underlying medical condition. You might also want to try a special type of food that is for sensitive stomachs or you can try cooking chicken and plain white rice. I suggest you try a bland diet.

However, some cats just have sensitive stomachs. No medical conditions are found but the cat will intermitently vomit. I have met a few cats that are like this. Sometimes the best you can do is figure out which diet helps in reducing the number of times she vomits and then going from there. But again, I suggest a visit to the vet's first.
