QUESTIONS TO THE CAT EXPERTS:

Date: Jan 11, 2008
Question:
do cats know when their oweners say that they love them? and do cats get depressed? Do cats know when they are being loved?
Moni

My cat surely knows he is loved. I tell him ALL the time and kiss and hug him. He loves the attention and will let me know when he is not receiving enough. He will follow me around and meow and rub against me; he will plead for my attention. My cat and I have a very deep bond.

Yes, animals can become depressed. The loss of a loved one (or owner) or a change in schedule can make a pet depressed or anxious. They may stop eating or eat less. They may become lethargic or exhibit other behavioral issues. If an animal is anxious, they might start chewing up things/destroying the place or not using the litter pan. This is an animal's way of saying "there's something wrong."

In extreme cases, veterinarians can prescribe medicines (similiar to human anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medicines) to help calm the animal.
